Honeywell Design Systems

Role & Key Contributions

Product Design Lead

Delivered a reusable and flexible design system

Led a 10+ cross-functional team workshop

Conducted 5 usability tests that validated the concept design

Problem

The data tables are one of the most commonly used components in diverse industrial product needs ranging from tracking multiple flight plans to optimizing a building’s energy performance.

In the team I led, we leveraged design systems as guidelines to help us build out our Enterprise SaaS products. While using the design systems, my team members and I were having challenges in the performance and usability of the UI components. I led the efforts to collaborate with our Lead UX Researchers and conducted user interviews and workshops, it was discovered that there was some cramming in features being placed on top of features, which left the components convoluted and bloated. I synthesized our insights and created a strategic design plan that would solve the issues with usability and performance which was presented to the product leadership.

Goals

User Goal

Have the ability to use data tables as key tools for organizing thousands of data points into formats that are easy for users, like the product teams to read, manipulate and pull valuable insights from.

Business Goal

Provide internal product teams and developers the ability to customize data tables time efficiently.

Client Accounts Retained
Global Users Impacted
Increase in Productivity

Based on my strategic approach leading the design team with the effort to optimize and modify the Enterprise Design Systems, the results provided value to the Organization. One of the key challenges was successfully addressed and resolved. The developers and product designers were able to increase their work productivity and performance. Which was quantified using one of our requirements and product management tools, Jira to analyze the team's delivery and velocity comparatively analyzing the year over year delivery. We were also able to retain our client accounts who have a global reach of hundreds of millions of users.

Road To Achieving Results

Stakeholder Workshop

The stakeholder workshop was 1 day, which resulted in a MVP concept.

Design System Wireframe
I aggregated the workshop concepts into wireframe user flows of the prioritized feature needs. This is a side-by-side comparison of a row density feature designed. Depending on user preference, they can adjust the height of the rows which allows them to see more or less data.
Design System & UI Pattern Components
Color Palette, Typography, Buttons & Input Fields
In addition to the wireframes, I created the UI patterns as a style guide to comprise of the overall Enterprise design system.

Results

I led the team in the strategic approach to creating the clickable prototype with our wireframes and conducted five usability testing sessions with stakeholders to validate if our solution was valuable. The sessions proved successful and confirmed we were in the right direction. Due to the positive feedback from the testing sessions we were able to deliver the final UI designs a month before the estimated delivery. We delivered a responsive, flexible Data Table design library for product designers to build tables that fit their specific needs. We were able to see improvements in the time spent interacting with the data UI components, the product designers productivity increased by nearly 50%. It is currently in use in key Honeywell Forge industrial product designs.
